All of us have crap that happens to us all the time but why do some of us just let it roll of our backs, while others erupt like every little setback is catastrophic?
For me, the answer is PURPOSE. Let me try to explain.
If you have a purpose, in business, in life, for a specific project, then all of the problems that come up are much easier to deal with. If I am trying to create the worlds greatest product, then all of the frustrations of dealing with attorneys and missed deadlines and government regulations become much easier to deal with. The problems don’t go away but they are put into a more manageable perspective.
If you are just showing up, punching a time clock, then every little annoyance becomes a huge deal. You have no purpose that makes the pain manageable. Is it any wonder that so many companies struggle with huge turnover? Without a purpose, most organizations are better at creating anger and frustration than they are at creating happy and creative employees.
When you have a purpose, not only is the pain that the journey inflicts more tolerable but your ability to make decisions along the way becomes much clearer. When you have a purpose, decisions are made by asking the question of “does this support my purpose?” instead of having endless meetings and 20 levels of approval in an attempt to reach consensus.
Whether you are angry & frustrated and struggling to reach your goals as an individual, as a team, or as an organization, ask yourself if you have a clearly defined purpose, if not, there is no better place to start than defining your purpose.
Life is too short to let minor inconveniences become huge obstacles to achieving your dreams.
